St. John’s Health Center objective was to grow the core medical service lines, recruit new physicians, and increase brand awareness in the West Los Angeles area. To attract these top physicians, St. John’s marketing pitch was to have dedicated marketing programs for the their departments, each director would have their own website and marketing campaign throughout the year. The organization purchased enterprise edition CMS software Ektron. Initially there was no formal process or templates for building each of these microsites and each site was treated as a separate individual project. Projects were exceeding the budget and missing their deadline.
Solution
I determined the bottleneck was our process-too much time in planning phase and with an infinite number of possibilities each time. By understanding the business goals and objectives & using the Ektron platform, I led the creation of an application tool that could allow non-technical users create an entire department section “microsite” in a few hours.

The application allowed a content editor to build out a department sub-site by selecting from a series of custom content page templates and plugin modules that can be reused across the site

The application included modular admin tools that enabled a non-technical team member the ability to add and edit content.
The modules could also be plugged in and re-used throughout the site. The application’s tools provided the flexibility to market a variety of branded merchandise and products, and offer promotions more effectively.
